Ways to write with Claude Code on a Mac

If you write in Markdown, whether articles, stories, specs, plans, reports or a journal, we recommend a writing app with the terminal built in, and Flywrite is that app: a Markdown editor you can style your way, Claude Code in a terminal that knows which file and text you're working on, plain files with no vault, and backup to your own GitHub repo at no extra cost. Code editors (Cursor or VS Code) are built around code, so keep one for coding and write in Flywrite. Obsidian with Claude Code suits linked notes, but it has no terminal of its own: the agent comes through a community plugin or a separate terminal app. The agent and its subscription are the same in every setup.

Pick a writing app with a terminal if

  • you write Markdown on a Mac: articles, stories, specs, plans, reports or a journal
  • you want Claude Code, or any CLI agent, working beside a page you've styled your way
  • you want plain files, an automatic whole-project checkpoint when Claude Code starts, and backup to your own GitHub repo, all in one app

Pick a code editor if

  • you mostly write code, and prose comes second
  • you want AI included in one plan (Cursor) or a free editor (VS Code)
  • you work on Windows or Linux too

Pick a notes vault with an agent plugin if

  • your writing lives in a vault of linked notes
  • you also want your notes on Windows, Linux or your phone
  • you'd rather start free and set up a plugin or a terminal yourself
